I’ve run into so many piss-poor quality things lately. Shoddy workmanship. Crappy attitudes. Sorry customer service.

I’ve found myself changing the Dirty Jobs theme song to “it’s a shoddy job, but you still have to pay me.”

Growing up, I was taught to work hard all the time. After a few decades of that, I’ve realized that I get a huge amount of satisfaction from doing high-quality work. I’ve been lucky to have worked with and for some of the best folks in my field. My work has won awards and acclaim. It doesn’t make me better than anyone else. It just sets the bar higher for me next time.

Too bad the folks I’ve encountered in the past months (years?) don’t feel the same. And it’s everywhere: at stores, restaurants, landscapers, volunteerism.....

Do outstanding work or go home. Can you hear me now?

Brand Awareness

I was recently reminded by a colleague that not everyone keeps a fully loaded tactical vest hanging on their bathroom towel hook at night “just in case.”

That caused me to take a look at my wardrobe and realize how much 5.11 Tactical gear is around. [who says wardrobe?] It didn’t happen all at once; it just kinda happened. The pants fit me and there’s plenty of pockets for all the stuff I carry. And the online retailer I buy from does a good job of email promotion, which keeps this brand on my mind. Plus, they make clothes that fit cops and firemen, people built like me, instead of the stick figures in the mall stores. [as if there was a real mall around here]

I needed a new pair of hiking boots to replace my vintage 1989 pair. It just happened that 5.11 Tactical had a sale where I got a free pair of pants, a shoe shine kit, and 4 pairs of socks.

These folks also make clothes suited for concealed carry. I’m a fan of their Backup Belt System which hold velcro backed holsters and cases. They carry back-up diapers, toys and snacks just as well.

So after almost two years of bargains I couldn’t refuse, I tend to dress like an “operator” even if I’m more of a Tactical Daddy. Funny how these things happen

So Much Noise

Most of what is around us is noise. Distraction.
Springsteen called it 57 Channels and Nothings On. So many things to keep our focus unfocused: gadgets, gossip and pop psychology disguised as news.

Rare moments of clarity seep though the noise like the ever-elusive WiFi signal in a crowded airport.
